Following it’s public consultation, the WRU has today published its recommendations for the future of professional rugby in Wales, proposing a reduction from four to three professional clubs.

This is a significant moment for the sport as we know it, and a major shift from the current model with wide-ranging implications for players, supporters, and communities across Wales.

The consultation was one of the most engaged processes Welsh rugby has ever seen, demonstrating just how much this decision means to people across the country. The WRU has said that people want a long-term fix, not a short-term patch, and I agree. The consultation confirmed that change is needed, and this new model must now focus time and investment into securing the future of our game.

As a fan and member of Cardiff Rugby’s Supporters’ Trust, I care deeply about the future of the game and I know so many people feel the same.

The WRU now has a responsibility to make this work for the whole Welsh rugby community, not just the professional tier. That means delivering on the commitments set out today: protecting the grassroots game, elevating the women’s game, and ensuring that no region is left behind.
