The Prime Minister’s statement on the 8th August 2025 rightly condemned the Israeli Government’s decision to escalate its offensive in Gaza. I welcome his clear call for restraint and his recognition that this escalation will not bring peace, will not secure the release of hostages, and will only deepen the humanitarian crisis.

As I have reiterated in my previous statements, the situation in Gaza is appalling and deteriorating rapidly. Every day brings more reports of civilian casualties, starvation, and the collapse of essential services. Hostages remain in captivity under dreadful conditions. The Israeli Government’s latest plans for a full occupation of Gaza City are deeply alarming and risk entrenching the cycle of violence and displacement.

We are unequivocal. There must be an immediate ceasefire. Humanitarian aid must be allowed to flow freely and safely. Hostages must be released. And Hamas must disarm and leave Gaza. These are not negotiable; they are the foundations for any credible path to peace.

The Prime Minister spoke of a long-term peace plan, rooted in a two-state solution. As a government, we are committed to turning that vision into reality. As noted in my previous statement (which can be found here: https://www.jostevens.co.uk/2025/07/30/statement-on-the-middle-east-2/ ), the recognition of the State of Palestine at the UN General Assembly in September is a key step in that process. It reflects our determination to help build a just and lasting peace.

We have also been crystal clear on the future of Gaza. Hamas cannot govern. But neither can Gaza be subjected to indefinite military occupation. The return of a reformed Palestinian Authority, supported by robust international security arrangements, is essential.

Diplomacy is not easy, but it is the only way forward. The Prime Minister is right to say that without good faith negotiations, the prospect of peace is vanishing. That is why our government continues to act, through sanctions, aid, and international pressure, to bring both parties back to the table.
