Ever since Boris Johnson’s bad Brexit deal, I’ve heard constantly from so many businesses and individuals across Cardiff East about the unnecessary bureaucracy, rising costs, and uncertainty it has caused.
That’s why the new trade agreement with the European Union announced at the UK EU summit on 13th May is such great news. This is the third trade deal reached by the UK Labour Government in just under two weeks. All three will make a real difference for people, businesses, and communities right across the UK, but particularly the UK-EU deal as they are our biggest trading partner.
Here are ten ways in which the deal will benefit Britain.
- Lower food prices at the checkout.
By making food and agriculture trade with the EU cheaper and easier, we’re bringing down food prices, giving everyone more choice and putting more money in peoples’ pockets. Businesses will have much less bureaucracy, the costs of trading will be lower and this will bring down prices.
- Driving down energy bills
Boris Johnson’s bad Brexit deal damaged the UK’s energy security. This deal increases cooperation with the EU on energy which will bring down bills in the long term.
- Stronger borders
The Brexit deal left a huge gap in our ability to work with the EU collaboratively to tackle illegal migration and go after the criminal gangs who are people smuggling and putting them on dangerous small boats risking their lives. The agreement includes joint action on enforcement and returns.
- Shorter queues when you go on holiday
Instead of waiting in long queues at passport control, UK travellers heading to Europe will now be able to use e-gates. Pet owners can also rejoice – ‘pet passports’ are making a comeback, making taking your pet on holiday simpler and cheaper.
- National Security and Defence
The deal will bring a more secure UK, with more jobs in our defence industry. In an era of global instability, our new defence and security partnership will deliver security at home and strength abroad.
- UK businesses will save millions
With more cooperation on carbon emission trading, UK businesses will no longer have to pay £800million in carbon taxes
- Backing UK steel
We’re saving the UK steel industry £25million each year by protecting our steel exports from new EU tariffs.
- Protecting fishing rights, access and areas
The agreement means no increase in the amount that EU vessels can catch in UK waters, fewer costs and less red tape. That’s good news for UK fishing because 70% of their business is exports to the EU. The UK Labour Government is also investing £360million into the UK fishing industry to drive growth and increase jobs.
- Combatting terrorism and serious organised crime
With more cooperation on law enforcement, we’ll work more closely with the EU with the sharing of intelligence, including facial recognition data for the first time.
- Good news for bills, good news for jobs and good for UK borders.
This UK Labour Government has rolled up its sleeves and delivered what the last Government couldn’t. A Government of Service.
