We are incredibly lucky to have free access to priceless resources like British Pathe, which offer us a treasure trove of audio-visual content from our history.
We must do all we can to conserve these collections and ensure they remain accessible to the public and future generations.
Our history belongs to all of us.
British Pathé includes over 85,000 films that are unrivalled in their historical and cultural significance. Spanning years from 1896 to 1978, the collection includes footage from Cardiff’s most famous moments in history, from royal visits to the empire games.
In celebration of Audio-Visual Heritage Day, I’d like to share a clip showcasing the rich history of Cardiff East. This footage features the Taff Swim, Wales’ Long Distance Swimming Championship, which was held annually at Roath Park starting in 1931. The clip highlights the event’s second year at the park, where H.J. James of Weston-Super-Mare and Miss C. Broadley of Hammersmith claimed the championship titles.
