The Rompney Castle has been part of the Rumney landscape since the 1870s. In order to protect the historic character of the area, Cardiff Labour Council issued an Article 4 Direction which prevented the owners of the building from demolishing the building. This direction has been in place since September 2023.
In August, Cardiff Council was informed that an application had been submitted for the demolition of Rompney Castle by the owner, which they are obliged to do under article 4 of the planning regulations.
Local Rumney Labour Councillors, Bob Derbyshire and Jackie Parry have campaigned tirelessly to ensure this historic building is preserved for future generations. Following their objections and those of local residents, I am pleased to share that the council has again rejected the plans to demolish the building for future re-development.
However, this is not a solution in itself, the building has recently been blighted by vandalism and anti-social behaviour. This is unacceptable and cannot be allowed to continue. The best way to prevent this level of disorder is by restoring this historic building to use. The Rumney Labour Team will continue to work with local residents to ensure that the building is protected for future generations.
