Today, we remember the 72 innocent people who lost their lives in the Grenfell Tower tragedy. My thoughts are with the bereaved families, the survivors and residents of the local
community.

The Grenfell Tower Inquiry Report, published today makes clear that all these deaths were entirely avoidable, and the residents of Grenfell Tower were repeatedly let down by the Government and institutions that should have protected them.

It is a source of national shame that the dangers of combustible cladding were known, but nothing was done, with matters of life ignored, delayed or disregarded. Yet, no one has been held to account and change has been too slow.

The Grenfell community have showed strength, courage and determination in their campaign to prevent another tragedy like this happening again.

This report must be a turning point, an important step towards accountability, justice and change.

The Prime Minister, Keir Starmer and Deputy Prime Minister, Angela Rayner will work urgently to speed up the changes that must take place.

Everyone has the right to expect a safe, secure, decent home, no matter their background.

The new UK Labour Government has set out a clear way forward on all recommendations for government from first report, that includes ensuring residential Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans for anyone whose ability to evacuate could be compromised.

We will consider all 58 of the Inquiry’s recommendations in detail and will respond in full to the Inquiry’s recommendations within six months and update Parliament annually on the progress of every commitment we make.
