The effects of 14 years of Tory economic mismanagement are still being felt by families and businesses across Cardiff East. The Tories left a toxic legacy of high energy bills, energy insecurity, and a failure to invest in clean energy.
Today’s energy price cap announcement by OFGEM is just the latest in a long list of problems Labour is now tasked with addressing. Unlike the Tories, we are tackling these challenges head-on with an ambitious mission to make Britain a clean energy superpower.
A Greener Britain
Under the Tories, Britain has been left exposed to volatile international energy markets. Energy bills have soared, and our energy security is more precarious than ever. This UK Labour Government won’t drag its feet. We have made it our mission to deliver cheaper, zero-carbon electricity by 2030. This will not only help protect people from future price spikes but will also create thousands of high-quality jobs and boost our energy independence.
Reforming Britain’s Broken Energy Market
There is no quick fix for our broken energy market. The fundamental changes required won’t happen overnight but there is action we can take now to protect consumers and hold energy suppliers accountable for poor practices. Under this UK Labour Government, tough new regulations will ensure that there are no repeats to the chaos seen under the Tories, whether thats the forced installation of pre-payment meters or suppliers going bust.
The Warm Homes Plan
A key part of our strategy to bring down bills is Labour’s Warm Homes Plan, which will upgrade millions of homes across the country. By investing in low-carbon heating and insulation, we will ensure that homes are not only more energy-efficient but also fit for a net-zero future. This bold and ambitious plan will cut energy bills, reduce fuel poverty, and provide a much needed upgrade to Britain’s ageing housing stock.
We will also continue the Warm Home Discount, ensuring that those on lower incomes can heat their homes without fear of unaffordable bills. This winter, over three million households will benefit from £150 off their energy bills under the scheme.
Support for Pensioners
Pensioners are understandably concerned about whether they will be able to heat their homes this winter. That’s why the Chancellor, Rachel Reeves repeated Labour’s manifesto to protect the triple lock on pensions for the duration of this Parliament. This will, over the next five years, mean that over 12 million pensioners will see their State Pension increase by thousands of pounds.
The Government has also confirmed that pensioners who are in receipt of Pension Credit will continue to receive the Winter Fuel Payment, with £200 for eligible households and £300 for those with someone aged over 80.
