The criminal disorder, dangerous extremism and racist and Islamophobic attacks we saw just a few weeks ago are against everything our country stands for.

Those who took part in attacks on our police, marched on mosques, burnt buildings, looted local shops and whipped up racial hatred online will and are being brought to justice.

The Prime Minister and Home Secretary have made clear that the police have the Government’s full backing in taking the strongest possible action against all of those
responsible for those disgraceful, criminal acts.

Additional prosecutors have been put in place, there have been more than 1,000 arrests and defendants have been charged, prosecuted and convicted. It has been noticeable that almost everyone charged has pleaded guilty. Many are now serving prison sentences.
