The Infected Blood scandal is an appalling injustice that has left victims denied justice for decades. The calls for recognition and compensation have gone unheard for far to long, now is the time for action.
I would like to pay tribute to those victims and campaigners who have fought so hard on this issue, including my colleague Dame Diana Johnson MP. Labour wants to help ensure that justice and compensation for victims and their families is delivered urgently.
The publication of Sir Brian’s final report will be an incredibly important moment for victims of this injustice.
There is now clear cross-party consensus on the need for urgent action to deliver a final compensation scheme for victims of the infected blood scandal. I welcome the commitments made by the government, but we must judge them by their actions. That is why the government must set out clear details on the compensation scheme and a firm deadline for victims.
The fact that thousands of people have died without getting the recognition and the compensation they were owed is a mark of shame. It is with them in mind that we must now act.
