Last week I joined Cardiff Student Action for Refugees (STAR) at their weekly drop-in session in Adamsdown.

STAR is a student-run society at Cardiff University which brings together refugees, asylum seekers and students on a weekly basis. They focus on building friendships and breaking down the barriers which divide communities.

I visited the weekly drop in, which takes place at the Trinity Centre in Adamsdown, each Wednesday, to meet some of the student participants and the refugees and asylum seekers who come along to the drop-in sessions.

The evening also saw the launch of the Cardiff Eritrea Society, with a presentation about the Eritrean refugee crisis. It was really interesting to hear from Eritreans who live in Cardiff, and see an exhibition of photographs taken by people from Eritrea documenting their daily lives.

the work the students and English language tutors do at STAR is fantastic and the whole evening had a very friendly and positive atmosphere.

I’m proud that our welcoming city has resources like this available to people from all over the world.
