Today is United Nations Public Service Day. This is an international celebration of people who work in public services across the world. In Cardiff, tens of thousands of people work in the public sector, day in day out, keeping our city running.

I want to thank them all today for the work they do all year round. Public servants keep all sorts of services going – from collecting bins and maintaining roads to treating people in hospital, teaching our young people or caring for the older generations.

I have sponsored an Early Day Motion in Parliament today to celebrate the work of public servants in Cardiff and across the UK:

That this House welcomes and supports the UN Public Service Day on 23 June 2015; recognises that Public Service Day pays tribute to all those who work in roles that serve the public and highlights their contribution to society in delivering key services to residents and communities across the length and breadth of the UK; and urges the Government to promote a worldwide celebration of this day in future years.

Elsewhere in Cardiff, Cardiff Council and council Leader Phil Bale have been promoting the work of dedicated staff across the council, and showcasing some of the important work they do. You can read Phil’s message about the day here.

You can also see tweets about the day from around the world using the hashtag #PublicServiceDay.
