During the 1st World War, Albany Primary School was used as a military hospital. Following a similar project last year, the year six pupils at the school created an exhibition for Made in Roath to share the school’s history with the local community. 

I was lucky enough to have a preview of the exhibition last week and it was fascinating to find out so much about the history of the school and how it was used.  

The whole of year six, under the guidance of their teachers Miss Richards and Miss Sawyer, have spent the half term learning about World War 1 and researching the history of the school. They have spoken to people whose relatives were treated in the hospital, found photographs and primary sources and created displays both physical and digital for visitors to interact with. 

A highlight of my tour was the hospital ward in which year six pupils were playing the roles of nurses and wounded soldiers. Their back stories were fascinating, and they knew all the answers to my questions about how they were injured and what sort of treatments they were receiving!
