Roath Flood Defence Scheme: Construction Update – 22 Feb 2018

Construction work continues to progress throughout Railway Gardens (the Sandies) and Waterloo Gardens, as well as at Waterloo Road bridge. We would like to thank the community for their ongoing patience during this time and assure you that we are working as fast as we can to complete the works and return the park gardens to you.

Dawnus will start the last sections of sheet piling either side of the new Waterloo Road bridge during the week commencing 19th February, with piling works expected to last 4 to 6 weeks. Piling will not be continuous during this time, as different machines are needed for some locations and ground conditions. Once this piling is complete and the services re-diverted we will surface the road over the bridge so we can re-open it to traffic in April.

Over the next couple of months, landscaping and planting works will be progressing in Railway Gardens and Waterloo Gardens. Once this is complete there will be a period to allow grass and shrubs to establish, during which the parks will unfortunately have to remain closed. We plan to re-open the majority of these two Parks by the end of July, subject to weather and growing conditions over the coming months. The northern section of Waterloo Gardens will re-open in August due to drainage works here, but we are looking at options to allow the footpath through this section to open earlier. A section of Railway Gardens near the St Peters Rugby Club grounds will also have to remain closed to allow access to the contractor’s compound located here.

Tree clearance works in Roath Brook Gardens and Roath Mill Gardens are currently paused whilst we hold further discussions with the community regarding the planned works here. We will not be undertaking any further tree felling in these Parks Gardens without prior notice. This does not affect the progress of works already underway in Railway Gardens and Waterloo Gardens. We shall keep you updated on this matter as it develops.
