Update: Cardiff Met Cyncoed Development – 9 Feb 2017

I was very pleased to learn yesterday that Cardiff Councillors have opposed the plans for the extension of the Cyncoed Campus of Cardiff Metropolitan University.

I have been working closely with local residents and submitted an objection to the council, opposing the plans.

The Campus is close to neighbouring residential properties in Cyncoed, Penylan and Pentwyn. Residents are understandably concerned about noise, parking and traffic impacts both during the construction phase and afterwards, when a seven-storey residential building is expected to have noise impacts on nearby residential areas.

It is encouraging that members of the planning committee have taken into account the concerns and objections raised by my constituents and I. The site is already a cause of parking problems in surrounding areas, and this future development would also have noise implications for people living nearby.

I welcome the development and expansion of Cardiff’s universities, and the high-quality education and research they bring to the city, but there must be reasonable consideration of the impact of these kind of developments on Cardiff residents, and honesty about the impacts of an increased number of students and the inevitable increase in traffic, noise and parking issues.
