DCMS Questions – S4C Review – 16 Nov 2017

This morning I questioned the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport on the independent review the department has commissioned into the future of S4C.

Euryn Ogwen Williams’ review will look at all aspects of the Welsh-language broadcaster and make recommendations for government on its future.

S4C are expected to lose £9 million of funding over the next three years and I’m concerned that it will struggle to achieve its goals as a home for Welsh-language programming. These cuts could also threaten its digital output.

Predictably the Secretary of State’s response was dismissive, and she simply reiterated the parameters for the review.

I am concerned that the government isn’t interested in the future of S4C and its programming in Wales, but this isn’t the last they’ll hear from me about it.

Question 6. What recent discussions she has had with S4C on its future funding?

Karen Bradley MP, Secretary of State for DCMS
Mr Speaker, as the hon lady will know, Euryn Ogwen Williams’ independent review of S4C is currently ongoing. The review will consider a range of issues including S4C’s remit, governance and funding methods.

Jo Stevens MP
I thank the Secretary of State for that reply. But it’s estimated that S4C are going to lose £9 million of funding over the next three years. Can she tell the House what guidance she has given to Euryn Ogwen Williams in conducting her review?

Karen Bradley MP, Secretary of State for DCMS
Mr Speaker, it’s an independent review. I’ve asked Euryn Williams to look at the remit, governance and funding methods, and it is down to him as an independent reviewer to look at those matters.
