Urgent Questions – Junior Doctor Contracts – 18 April 2016

In an urgent debate granted by Speaker John Bercow, I was able to question Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt over his handling of the junior doctors’ dispute.

The urgent question was granted to my Labour colleagues after Jeremy Hunt unexpectedly abandoned his repeated threat to impose a new contract on junior doctors – a move that has led to four strikes by doctors so far.

The change in approach from Jeremy Hunt shows that the Government is in complete disarray over junior doctor contracts, and Mr Hunt has a lot to answer for.

I asked the Health Secretary:

If the Secretary of State is imposing a contract can he say exactly where that power comes from? And can he explain why the Government’s legal team failed to argue that case?

Sadly the Secretary refused to answer my question.
