My question to the Business Minister on BHS staff and the Insolvency service – 25 April 2016

This evening I asked Business Minister Anna Soubry if she believes the Insolvency Service will be able to help the workers of BHS given that the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills is making a huge cut of 40% in the service, compared to the 17% cut asked by the Treasury.

The Minister responded to my question with a simple ‘yes’. I am yet to be convinced by the Minister, and remain deeply concerned by the cuts to the Insolvency Service. The service provides invaluable assistance to people across the UK, and, at a time when 11,000 people may lose their jobs at BHS, its ability to function fully is even more important.

You can read and watch the exchange below:

Jo Stevens MP for Cardiff Central:
“I represent a city centre constituency, and I know that many of my constituents are worried about their jobs at BHS today. The Minister has mentioned the role that the Insolvency Service will play. Given that her Department is voluntarily offering to make cuts of 40% in the service, rather than the 17% demanded by the Chancellor, is she confident that it will be able to help the BHS workers?”

Anna Soubry MP, The Minister of State, Department for Business, Innovation and Skills:
“The short answer is yes: I have complete confidence in the Insolvency Service.”
