Maelfa Redevelopment Given Approval – 20 April 2016

Today, after years and years of Lib Dem inaction, the Maelfa Redevelopment project was given approval by Cardiff’s Labour Council.

The Maelfa Centre is a lifeline for the residents of Llanedeyrn. It provides vital community facilities, and many Llanedeyrn residents rely on the shops and health centre. Residents have waited a very long time for progress on this development and finally, there is progress.

The previous Liberal Democrat administration, in their 8 years in charge of the Cardiff Council, failed to produce a viable redevelopment scheme for the Maelfa. I’m really pleased to see Cardiff’s Labour Council has taken action to ensure that this much-needed redevelopment will go ahead.

The exciting plans include a new public square, a new carpark, nine new shops, 38 affordable flats, 16 affordable town houses and 52 private homes. Demolition will start in September 2016 and the build will completed over the next three years.

The existing Powerhouse will also be extended, and converted into an all-purpose hub. Plans for the hub include a new community cafe, reception and library on the ground floor, along with new interview and training rooms. These important new facilities will be right at the heart of the community.

A recent local consultation showed 93% of respondents supported the proposed hub and many Llanedeyrn residents I have spoken to are strongly backing the redevelopment.

It shows the difference that a Labour Council, with the support of a Labour Assembly Member and Labour MP can make for Llanedeyrn.
