Jo Stevens MP Backs ‘It’s No Joke’ Launch – 21 April 2016

On Friday 15th April, I was pleased to join Cardiff Students’ Union President Claire Blakeway and other students at the launch of Cardiff University Students’ Union’s new campaign to tackle lad culture on Cardiff campuses.

The NUS defines lad culture as “a group or ‘pack’ mentality residing in activities such as sport and heavy alcohol consumption, and ‘banter’ which is often sexist, misogynist and homophobic”.

This strategy seeks to change both culture and behaviour on the Cardiff University campuses and to build campuses that are safe and inclusive to all of our students where lad culture is never tolerated.

At the start of this academic year, Cardiff University became one of the first students’ unions to take part in the NUS Anti-Lad Culture pilot scheme.

The key aim of this scheme was for students’ unions to develop an anti-lad culture strategy for their campus. Cardiff Students’ Union  have spent the last eight months developing an effective strategy to tackle this type of behaviour in Cardiff and to help make Cardiff an even better place to live and study.

I am really pleased to see Cardiff University Students’ Union leading the way in combating ‘Lad Culture’ on-campus. University campuses need to be safe and secure environments for all and I congratulate Cardiff Students Union on their work to ensure this is a reality for Cardiff Students.
