Jo Stevens MP Opens Office for Collections to Support Refugees in Crisis

Jo Stevens MP has opened her constituency office as a venue to collect donations which will be sent to support refugees in crisis.

The refugee crisis across Europe and at the makeshift camp in Calais has escalated recently due to large numbers of refugees particularly from Syria, which is beset by civil war. Over 4 million refugees have fled Syria since the start of the war (stats from UNHCR).

In response to inaction from the UK Government, many citizens have been campaigning for the UK to take in and provide support to refugees and would like to take practical action to support people affected.

Jo Stevens MP has joined a group from Cardiff and offered her constituency office as a location for local people to donate much-needed items to be sent to refugees in Calais and across Europe. Items can be donated until Friday 11th September.

Jo Stevens said:

"Last night I and two friends decided we had to do something practical to help. So it was obvious to me that I could offer my office as a drop off point for donations of much needed items. There are so many people who feel the same and want to help. The collection will be open until 11th September , when all items will be taken to Bristol and onto Calais and then parts of Europe.

"The plight of refugee families is a humanitarian crisis and I've been inundated with constituents sharing the information about how to donate, along with offers of help.

"Many refugees and asylum seekers in Cardiff Central come to my surgeries for help. They've been lucky to escape with their lives and make the journey here safely. Many others haven’t been so lucky.

"Government labelling of people fleeing war in the middle east has masked the scale of human suffering in the media until the last few weeks. David Cameron has singularly failed to show any leadership over this issue. People in Cardiff Central are telling me they feel we have a responsibility to help before it’s too late. David Cameron needs to listen and act now."
