Parliamentary Roles and Responsibilities

I am currently a member of the Justice Select Committee.

Between January 2016 and October 2016 I was Shadow Justice Minister for prisons, probation and sentencing and  Shadow Solicitor General, in which capacity I supported the Shadow Attorney General in providing legal advice to the Shadow Cabinet. From October 2016 - January 2017, I was Shadow Secretary of State for Wales and a member of the Shadow Cabinet.

Welsh Parliamentary Labour Party

I am also Vice Chair of the Welsh Parliamentary Labour Party.

Trade Union Group of MPs

I am the Secretary of the Trade Union Group of MPs. This group brings together trade unionist MPs and works with unions to make sure the voices of working people are being heard in Parliament.

Parliamentary Friends of Colombia

I am the Vice Chair of Parliamentary Friends of Colombia. I've campaigned for many years on behalf of trade unionists and human rights activists in Colombia and I'm pleased to be able to continue this work in Parliament.

All Party Parliamentary Groups

I am a member of a number of All Party Parliamentary Groups (APPGs). These groups bring together MPs from different parties with an interest in a particular topic to share information and campaign on key issues relevant to the topic. I am currently a member of a number of APPGs, either because they are directly relevant to Cardiff Central, it's population and issues, or because constituents have asked me to join a group that is particularly important to them, or they cover a longstanding interest of mine.

I am currently a member of the following APPGs:

Bangladesh

Beer

Cricket

Curry Industry (Secretary to the Group)

Football

Haemophilia and Contaminated Blood

Heart Disease

Justice for Equitable Life Policy Holders

Legal Aid (Vice Chair)

Lyme Disease (Vice Chair)
